Mother Road, An exploration of Route 66 by artist Jessica Harvey, will be on display at the Arts and Humanities Council of Tulsa’s Hardesty Arts Center located at 101 E. Archer St. in Downtown Tulsa through November 23rd. Entrance is free and open to the public!
Mother Road is a project derived from the history and myths that come from traveling Route 66, which illustrates journeys – both personal and shared – through road trips, driving and discovery. Artist Jessica Harvey displays artifacts and photographs from her own Route 66 odyssey, and invites the public to explore her studio at AHHA where they may offer their own personal artifacts and record individual stories and memories. This shared project aims to reveal how a diverse group of people collectively feel about travel, Americana, and the culture of the great American road trip.
Harvy is an artist who explores the myths we create for ourselves and nature while trying to preserve a more desired history. Harvey earned her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2009, and she returned to Chicago from Iceland after being awarded a Fulbright Grant for the 2011-2012 year. There, she photographed the remaining military structures that are still present from the United States’ occupation of Iceland, which began during World War II, and the U.S. military presence continued until 2006. During her time there she also collected stories from various Icelanders who had a connection to the U.S. military bases in Iceland as well as U.S. soldiers who were stationed there. She has exhibited throughout the United States and in Iceland at places such as the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids, MI; Johalla Projects in Chicago, IL; The Center for Contemporary Photography in Detroit, MI; and the Cranbrook Art Museum.
