You know you can't believe everything you read or see on your friend's Facebook profiles, and a new potential scam is targeting you and your holiday generosity.

It's called the "Secret Sister Gift Exchange."

The Facebook post says you buy a gift for one person, add your name to the list, and you'll receive 36 gifts, WFLA reported.

"This is a typical pyramid scheme. We're just seeing this on Facebook this time instead of the old way of using letters, and Facebook allows it to spread a lot faster," said Kelli Burns, University of South Florida mass communications instructor.

The post is technically illegal since the scheme uses the mail to deliver gifts and the United States Postal Service has rules against pyramid schemes that use the mail system, WFLA reported.
