As a kid, William Martin Joel was a successful boxer on the amateur Golden Gloves circuit. He won 22 bouts, but quit boxing after breaking his nose during his 24th match. A high school dropout, in 1992 Billy submitted essays to the school board at Hicksville New York’s High School and finally received his diploma at his school’s annual-graduation ceremony 25 years after leaving. 

In 1965, he was hired by legendary music producer Snuff Garrett as a pianist and played on several recording sessions for artists like Bobby Vee and the Shangri-Las. Billy is an American Music ICON and one of the best-selling artists of all time. With 33 Top 40 Hits, a six-time Grammy winner (nominated for 23 Grammy Awards). Billy also won the American Music Award for Favorite Album for Glass Houses. He is in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2013 received the nation’s highest honor for influencing American culture through the arts, the Kennedy Center Honors.
