Summer Salute Blood Drive

TULSA, Okla. (June 1, 2013) – How will you celebrate the nation’s birthday this year? Will you fly Old Glory, gather with family for food and fun and take time to remember and acknowledge the hard-won debt owed for freedom? This year the American Red Cross offers the opportunity to commemorate Independence Day and help save lives by giving blood at the Summer Salute Blood Drive on July 1 and 2.

Joining the Red Cross for this special community blood drive is Jim Bridenstine, United States Representative for Oklahoma’s first congressional district. An aviator in the Navy Reserves, Congressman Bridenstine began a two-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives in January 2013 and is serving as the honorary chairman of the two-day event.

“I’m happy to be helping the Red Cross raise awareness for the need for blood going into the July 4 holiday,” said Congressman Bridenstine. “Giving blood can be a great way to honor honoring service men and women while helping the community.”

While quantities last, all presenting donors at the Summer Salute Blood Drive will receive a patriotic T-shirt, compliments of KRMG’s Take Action Campaign.

Everyone coming to donate can also register to win one of two American flags flown over the Capitol during the Memorial Day weekend.

“Ensuring blood is on hospital shelves for those in need is our mission, but we can’t fulfill that mission alone,” said Steve Nagle, CEO, Southwest Blood Services Region. “Thank you Congressman Bridenstine and everyone who is helping the Red Cross prepare our community’s blood supply for the long holiday weekend.”

During the summer months of June, July and August, on average, about two fewer donors give blood at each Red Cross blood drive than what hospital patients need. If at least two more donors gave blood at every Red Cross blood drive this summer – above what’s expected – the Red Cross would be better assured of having enough lifesaving blood products available for patients in need. Live a story. Give a story. Donate blood.
