CLAREMORE, Okla. — The Cherokee nation unveiled a large mural in downtown Claremore Thursday.

Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr., Claremore city leaders and residents were at the large-scale mural to witness the unveiling. The piece of art is called “The Heart of Claremore” and is a representation of the ties between the Cherokee Nation and the Claremore community.

“Art helps tell a story, but it also helps raise conversations and discussions,” said Chief Hoskin. “I imagine young members of this community seeing that and who’s depicted and learning more about those people and learning about what they can do for their community.

He continued, “I think these individuals depicted are very inspirational, and that’s exactly what you want art to be. Something that inspires.”

Chief Hoskin also said the Cherokee artist of the mural, Sherri Pack, died tragically last year. However, he said the mural lives on as part of her legacy.
