Covid cases rising inside Tulsa Fire Dept.

Chief says it mirrors surrounding community

The Tulsa Fire Department is holding the line for the most part on Covid-19 cases among firefighters, thanks to rigorous cleaning and other safety protocols.

Even so, Chief Michael Baker says they’re starting to see their numbers creep back up to July levels, just like the surrounding community.

He says it’s of course critical for them to keep their numbers low, to make sure the city has adequate fire protection.

“When you’re a critical infrastructure and critical community service, you have to protect yourself even moreso,” Baker said.

Right now, about 12 percent of the department’s firefighters are in quarantine.

Around 90 total have tested positive for the virus since they started testing during the summer.
