Tulsa woman charged with child endangerment, DUI after passing out behind the wheel

TULSA, Okla. — A Tulsa woman faces charges after police say she drunkenly passed out behind the driver’s seat with two children in the car.

Several witnesses called 911 Wednesday evening, reporting that a woman was passed out in the front seat of a sedan in the middle lane of Highway 169 near 51st Street.

Grace Duncan saw the arrest.

“As we go close I saw this woman being handcuffed outside the car,” she said.

When officers arrived, they found Ariana Walker passed out behind the wheel with her foot on the brake. Tulsa Police Officer Andre Baul said there were indeed children the car.

“There were kids in the backseat that were passed out and the driver was passed out. Once officers arrived, they saw that there were two small children in the back, and later found out they were 6 years old and 2 months old, both in the backseat and were sleeping,” He said.

One officer parked his cruiser in front of Walker’s car while another officer woke her up.

Walker tried to drive forward, but couldn’t pull away.

The two children were not hurt, and Walker failed field sobriety tests. She now faces two counts of child endangerment and DUI under 21.

“I read the story online that happened to those poor children ... Being an educator myself, it’s really upsetting to [see] that happen to children,” Duncan said. “That could have ended in a really terrible accident. Those poor children could have been killed.”

Baul said there was a passenger in the car who was also asleep.

“This is an arrest, not a conviction. The fact of the matter is that you never want to be in an inebriated state when you’re behind the wheel of a vehicle. You should never place somebody, especially kids, in danger with you,” Said Baul.

Walker, who is Native, has been previously arrested on DUI charges. She was arrested almost exactly one year ago on June 20, 2021. Those charges were dismissed.
