Salvation Army offers meal, hats, scarves on Thanksgiving

TULSA, Okla. — The Salvation Army offered a Thanksgiving meal to the public on Thursday afternoon.

The meal took place from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Center of Hope, near W. Archer St. and N. Denver Ave, in downtown Tulsa. Free hats, scarves and gloves were also handed out.

Area Commander Captain Dan Nelson said they do a public meal every afternoon, but having the extra touch of a traditional Thanksgiving meal made today’s meal special.

“Well for us, well this is what we do everyday, you know, everyday of the week we are providing food for the guests that need a place to stay, for those that are staying with us a little more permanently and those that are staying with us as needed,” he said. “We’re providing that meal, today the special reason, I mean it’s Thanksgiving, and so the extra touch of the traditional meal and the decorations on the table just make for a better, a more giving, feeling and one that we can be thankful for in receiving,” he said.

Captain Nelson also the work the Salvation Army does, including this Thanksgiving meal, would not have been possible without the community’s support.

“We’re still so thankful for those that support the Salvation Army on an ongoing basis so that we can do this and support our neighbors, it’s really the support of the community that helps the Salvation Army do what we’re doing, everyday, and especially this nice Thanksgiving lunch today,” he said.

The meal was also the first sit-down Thanksgiving meal since COVID.
