According to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release, the 2-year-old girl and 3-month boy were found near Eagle Pass, Texas.

The children, who were siblings, were both from Honduras, customs agents said.

Border agents performing boat operations found the children when they noticed an unusual color on the riverbank, according to the news release. Agents quickly responded and took the children to safety at the Uvalde Station for processing. Neither child required medical attention.

A note under the infant’s carrier confirmed that the children were related, according to the news release. After a search in the area, no other people were found.

“The attention to detail our agents demonstrate while performing their duties can be the difference between life and death,” the U.S. Border Patrol, Del Rio sector, stated in a Facebook post. “It is heartbreaking and frustrating to know that there are children being abandoned without remorse or concern for their lives and well-being.”
