New Tulsa Police K9 officer can sniff out guns and explosives

Assigned to TPD’s Crime Gun Unit

Tulsa Police just got a new police dog, but not just ANY police dog.

Lt. Sean “Sticks” Larkin says “Mimi”, a yellow lab, has special training in finding explosives, including gunpowder.

“Basically the particles and substances involved in explosives. It’s allowed her to do a few other things that some of the other dogs can’t, including finding firearms, which is a big deal for us in the Crime Gun Unit,” Larkin said.

The Crime Gun Unit is a special unit to get illegal guns off Tulsa streets.

Police say Mimi even found a single shell casing from hundreds of feet away.

Larkin says she’s the only dog with her kind of training in the entire state.

The dog is a joint project between TPD and the ATF.
